route 40

This adventure trip is special for those travelers that are looking forward to have a great travel experience in Patagonia.

The Ruta 40 (Route 40) is the dorsal spine of this region. We drive south along this route to reach our destinations. Then, the flora & the fauna will join us on the many walks and treks that we will do and the locals will share with us their life experience.

The trip starts in Bariloche at the heart of The Lake District. An area dominated by uncountable lakes and rivers of crystal waters and covered by a dense forest.

Then we enter on the endless steppe-like plains where the view is lost on the horizon. This is the place chosen by the original people to leave their trace like beautiful art and today’s inhabitants lives surrounded by solitude.

The ending is granite & glacier country, the border with one of the most impossible places to live but at the same time one of the most dramatic beauties on Earth. No pictures or friend’s tales will help us to understand that, we have to be there.

Welcome briefing & welcome dinner.

Day 4: Trevelin-Los Antiguos, 630km. The longest bus ride of the trip goes through sheep farming country. Tiny countryside towns, endless plains and time to talk with our trip partners, listen music and take the best mate “tea” lesson!!!
Day 5: Los Antiguos-Estancia Menelik, 450km. This segment of the Route 40 is colorful and dramatic. We will hike almost 2 hours along the impressive Río Pinturas Canyon to reach the Cueva de las Manos, the most important archeological site of Patagonia. In this Unesco World Heritage site the ancient cultures left their art expression 9.000 years ago. If we are lucky with the weather we will see San Lorenzo Mt. before arriving to Estancia Menelik. Here we will learn about the hard life at the Far South.
Day 6: Full day visit to Perito Moreno N.P. Perhaps the more remote and lest visited national park of Argentina. Climb to Cerro León, our first hard trekking for a spectacular view of the Park, only for us!!!
Day 7: Menelik-El Chaltén, 470km. Back to Route 40 and its dramatic endless landscapes. No men’s land, guanacos, rheas, hawks and eagles are the true inhabitants. We hope the best to be blest with the famous Patagonian mountain silhouette, Fitz Roy & Cerro Torre massif.
